OpenVZ support in Ubuntu 10.04[ 7 votes ]

Hello,

I am looking for some feedback guidance on the possibility that OpenVZ is not going to be supported in the next Long Term Support release of Ubuntu, due in April (10.04 / Lucid), that it is being replaced by Linux Containers (LXC).

I've invested a fair amount of time and effort getting to know OpenVZ and have it working well. I am upset to hear I now have to learn LXC and migrate to something that isn't as well up to the job.

I'd like to hear comments/suggestions/opinions, etc on this from the OpenVZ Community.

Thanks.

Same goes for Debian, from what I can tell, there will be no OpenVZ in the next stable Debian release called squeeze. It is quite sad since I think OpenVZ is a great piece of software.

Debian will have an lxc kernel

Not shure what has happened but on this site:
http://lxc.sourceforge.net/bench/

it seems that kyrill is "talking" - he is one of the OpenVZ Kernel programmers.

This is unfortunate.

I've really enjoyed OpenVZ under Lenny, sad to hear I won't be able to use this on 10.04 LTS or Squeeze. :/

Why is OpenVZ not in the linux kernel? Why does OpenVZ not support newer kernels?

I've tried LXC and did not care for it (Buggy, lack of documentation, etc.)

Ah well, there's always OpenSolaris or old, old versions of Linux for those of us that require containers. xD

Yes, it seems openvz will soon be alive on 2.6.32 kernels. Furthermore, there are some indications that RHEL 6 will also use a 2.6.32 kernel.

This isn't official though. I have seen bugs and other similar posts indicating that RHEL 6 will either use 2.6.31 or 2.6.32, but the latter is a more recent information.

I have a hunch that this is what really prompted the openvz team to make this move.

Oh great. I had a problem with a set up a existing box for a host OpenVZ with the KVM.
Seems like that the 2.6.27.42-chistyakov.1 doesn't recognize the

0000:01:00.0: eth0: (PCI Express:2.5GB/s:Width x1) 00:30:48:bd:ec:58
0000:01:00.0: eth0: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection
0000:01:00.0: eth0: MAC: 3, PHY: 8, PBA No: 0101ff-0ff
e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None

that's why would be better to have the OpenVZ with 2.6.31/32. I know that I can backport the latest Intel e1000 code to the 2.6.27 and commit patch to the chistyakov...

Anyway, where can I find the RH 6.0 src packages ? Few times ago was a smth like a "Rawhide" where I was able to find the latest sources and pre-packages for a RedHat and port few patches to the PLD Linux (that was a long time ago Razz) Is is still somewhere in RedHat ?

RHEL 6 beta isn't public yet. As far as I could see, it's still at internal alpha release stage.

As far as kernel goes, I've seen these mentioned:
2.6.31-33.el6
2.6.32-14.el6

The closest thing you'll get right now is Fedora 12, Fedora 13/Rawhide. How close will RHEL 6 be to any of these remains to be seen. Kernels are certainly different.

Just took another look at Koji and it seems that both Fedora 11 and 12 will get kernel 2.6.32 very soon.

Some patience and you'll soon have a kernel very close to RHEL 6 to play with... Or you could just grab these from Koji.

There is no support for Ubuntu 10.04, but you can run OpenVZ following the community tutorial.

You can find this in a web searcher:
help ubuntu openvz
