RHEL 5 uses kernel 2.6.18-164 while the latest prebuilt kernel containing OpenVZ is based on kernel 2.6.18-128.2.1.

Are you waiting on posting an update to the repository for technical reasons?

I generally like to keep up to date with RHEL. Any estimate when the kernel will be updated?

I'd also like to know more about this... The goal on our end is to be in sync with the 5.4 release of CentOS/RHEL.

I can understand that openvz lags behind the current kernel, just looking for an approximate roadmap.

Updated kernel would be indeed nice.

Centos 5.4 just updated the kernel to the latest RHEL 5 kernel (/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5). Centos 5 is what I run on my servers.

I'm thinking it might be better in the long term to switch to KVM even though OpenVZ's container virtualization is really all I need and I really like it. It bothers me a bit to have to be out of sync (even though it probably will work just fine on the older kernel).

Is there an active effort to get kernel changes for OpenVZ into the kernel.org sources?

Or, has Linus vetoed this possibility preferring some other virtualization instead? Seems to me there should be room for a container virtualization approach like OpenVZ even if full hardware virtualization is supported for those needing that.

Red Hat typically backports the updates, security fixes and other enhancements to the kernels they release, do not let the version number be your only guide. It is a bit like comparing red apples to green apples, see;

http://www.redhat.com/security/updat...g/?sc_cid=3093

With that said one can use the updated kernels from Fedora Core 6;

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...ore/updates/6/

Get the list of your installed kernel packages; rpm -qa --qf="%{n}-%{v}-%{r}.%{arch}n" 'kernel*'
Download
the matching updated kernel rpm packages and install them; rpm -ivh kernel*.rpm

Are kernels from FC6 still updated somewhere that I don't know about? This distro has been archived for a long time now.

Anyway, we are comparing apples with apples here, RHEL kernels with ovz kernels. Openvz kernels are based on upstream RHEL kernels. They have been lagging behind a bit, that's all. What has that got to do with RedHat's backporting?
