Hi All...

I have reviewed the docs concerning user_beancounters and resource
allocation. It was my plan to have a bunch of very light VPSs doing
certain things. I have noticed that Debian Etch runs nicely under OpenVZ
and I have a bunch of VPSs running it, but apt-get seems to need an awful
lot of kernel memory.

Has anyone else noticed this? What settings do you use when you need to
run apt-get?

Thanks...

Hi Jim,

/proc/ub/<VEID>/kmem_debug shows more detailed statistic about objected charged to kmemsize. I hope it will help You to understand why have resources shortage when it starts apt-get.

However anyway you will need to increase kmemsize limits -- at least I do not see any ways to exclude it.

Thank you,
Vasily Averin

Thanks Vasily...

I have increased the kmemsize limit, as that was the only way to resolve
the issue. It surprises me that apt-get needs more resources than many of
the other apps I run. How much of a negative impactdoes increasing
kmemsize have on the rest of the system? I run AMD64 Etch, but it kmemsize
still a limited resource?

Hi Jim,

kmem_debug output can clarify this situation.
I expect it happens because apt-get open many files. Each open files and directories eats kmemsize for disk-related structures.

For x86_64 kernels sum of all VE's kmemsize and allsoketbufs limits should not be greather than 40% RAM on your node.
You can find some more details about UBC configuration in our Wiki:
http://wiki.openvz.org/UBC_systemwide_configuration.

thank you,
Vasily Averin
