After booting from OpenVZ installation iso, I get a popup window shown stating that VT-x, EPT and unrestricted guests are required for Intel CPUs. AMD CPUs on the other hand have to support SVM and RVI.

Do these requirements also apply for systems where only operating system level virtualization is in use? Do these requirements only apply to hardware virtualization?

Yes, QEMU/KVM hypervisor requires virtualization support in hardware (SVM/VT-x).
