Hi,
I'm looking for vzdev-3.3.13-1.4.swsoft rpm for centos5 or a source if
it exists.
It came preinstalled in centos templates I've downloaded some time ago
from http://download.openvz.org/contrib/template/precreated/, havent
checked, maybe it still comes preinstalled. I really like the elegancy
with which it solves the "udev problem".
But I have also converted a few VMs from xen and physical hosts and
need to install this on top of a CT, not in a template.
I have managed to find vzdev-3.3.13-1.3.swsoft, but this 0.01 older
version has a critical flaw: it does not provide udev so every VPS
upgrade involving something that depends on udev pulls in udev and
wreaks havoc ;)
So, where is this rpm coming from? Who is creating centos5 templates
in download.openvz.org/contrib/? Where did you get it?
Thanks and regards,

As I understand udev replacement for Containers is vzdev and you can get it from
http://vzdownload.swsoft.com/ez/packages/centos/5/

Yes, but vzdev in that repo is ancient (1.0-7, we're talking about 3.3
here) and doesn't provide udev so you have to have udev installed and
that causes tons of problems

I have actually looked, thats why I'm utterly confused now. Why would
anyone want to go *down* in version numbers is beyond me.
$ rpm -qi vzdev

Version : 3.3.13 Vendor: (none)

Ok, if you say so. Let's see what the next udev upstream update will
bring ;)

I think you are talking about 2 different packages:
http://krnjevic.com/wp/?p=80 talks about building centos5 metadata and
using vzyum to install packets in containers
what I don't understand where did you got package vzdev version 3.3.13
and vzyum is obsoleted.
related forum topic:
http://forum.openvz.org/index.php?t=msg&goto=42688
if you want to create centos container download it from
http://download.openvz.org/template/precreated/
and use yum inside container to install packages you want

udev has been running fine inside of OpenVZ containers for a little over 2 years now I think. I'm not sure it actually does anything useful but at least it doesn't break anything like it used to.
With regards to CentOS (RHEL or any other clones), they shouldn't be changing api/abi within a release so I doubt you'd see them include something from upstream that breaks something. I mean, we've been through about 4 updates in the CentOS 5 series since udev has been working.
Please note that udev is also working in Scientific Linux 6 containers and udev has changed a bit between RHEL 5 and 6.
The point is that the "if udev gets installed, it breaks the container so we need to keep it from getting installed" situation has been fixed for a couple of years now. Anyone still having problems with it are using ancient OS Templates because the ones provided by the OpenVZ project have included udev for a long time now.

Good point BUT you were talking about making a new OS template if I remember correctly and you definitely do not want to base it on an older one.
CentOS 5 is actually old. It originally came out about 4 years ago (RHEL anyway)... and for a Linux distro, that is ancient... but of course they have updated it about every 6 months so we have 5.6 now. RHEL 5.7 beta was released a while ago so I'd expect to see RHEL 5.7 in a couple of weeks... with the clones to follow after as soon as they can.

Yes... well... sorta.
We had one person contribute an OS Template for Scientific Linux 6 that he made by migrating a physical machine to container.
Kir released a beta for Scientific Linux 6 some time ago... as well as an updated beta.
I took the Scientific Linux 6 beta OS Template that Kir released and then updated it, made a few changes (removed samba packages, added nano, mc, links, screen... and tweeked apache config some) and added it to contrib.
If you aren't familiar with Scientific Linux, it is a long time RHEL clone that seems to be getting more attention with the delay of CentOS 6. For more info, here are two good reference:

Ah, that's interesting. Yeah, I heard about it, but haven't tested it yet.
I'll give it a look. Thanks!
