I'd like to know if it's advised to separate /var to an own partition on an OpenVZ container.

And if so, how can it be accomplished?

Debian Wheezy

you can set folders whatever you want in vz.conf and [ct_id].conf files.

in my practice I create quite small partitions for the system and all the rest for separate openvz partition where all containers stored.
