I attempted to upgrade my kernel the other day. I don't remember the previous version because it removed the package, but the latest installed version is 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.028stab053.10.

The machine didn't come back up, so I had to go on site and select a previous kernel to get the machine to boot. That version is 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.028stab053.6.

What do you need to see what's going on?

You have to set up remote console (or otherwise get an access to the console) and log boot messages -- then file a bug to http://bugzilla.openvz.org/

Before I go to the remote console, I thought I would update and try again. I dunno if this happened last time, but I got some errors.

I updated this BIOS, and now I get this. I tried apic=debug, but it balked at it.

Memory for crash kernel (0x0 to 0x0) notwithin permissible range

Unknown genapic `apic=debug' specified.

..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC

Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option

It only boots into the old kernel (Linux Char.ICS.local 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.028stab053.6 #1 SMP Mon Feb 11 20:14:31 MSK 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) with noapic. USB devices don't work once it finishes booting.

As far as I see your old kernel is x86_64. Are you sure that new kernel is x86_64 too?

I want my kernel to be x86_64. I did a yum upgrade and this is what happened.

[root@Char ~]# rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-2.6.18-8.el5
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.028stab053.6
kernel-headers-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5
ovzkernel-devel-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.028stab053.10
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.028stab053.10
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.028stab053.6
ovzkernel-devel-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14

Should I remove the rpms for all of the duplicates, but appending .i386 to the end if I want to remove all i386 kernels, leaving only x64 ones?

i386 kernels does not work on x86_64 nodes: they cannot exec x86_64 binary to load i386 modules -- it looks like your issue.
Therefore I would advise you to remove these kernels.

thank you,

I appended .i386 to each of those duplicate packages, and rpm ended silently with the packages still there. How do I get rid of them?

[root@Char ~]# rpm -q ovzkernel --qf "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}.%{ARCH}\n"
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.028stab053.6.i686
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.028stab053.6.x86_64
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.028stab053.10.x86_64
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.13.el5.028stab053.10.i686
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14.x86_64
ovzkernel-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14.i686

So they are .i686 instead of .i386... I'll remove those packages.

Upon removing the x86_64 kernels, rpm removed everything from /etc/grub.conf. The only way I knew to get it back in was to remove the current stable x64 kernel packages and reinstall them by downloading from the web site and installing by rpm instead of yum.

[root@Char ~]# uname -a
Linux Char.ICS.local 2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14 #1 SMP Thu May 8 16:29:13 MSD 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So the system boots into the proper kernel now. That's the output of the remote console. Is there anything there I should be concerned with? APIC is disabled in the BIOS, otherwise I had to specify noapic in the kernel options.
