Hi everybody,

Currently I am doing a performance study on virtualization. I am intending to compare three software. VMWare, Xen and OpenVZ. Through my reading in the literature of virtualization I did not find that openVZ is mentioned. And I did not find OS level virtualization as well. In fact I want to include openVZ in my study but I am not sure whether it is using a paravirtualization technique or not. Because the comparison must be of the same type.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated

Regards

OpenVZ is not paravirtualization, it is rather containerization. See the difference here: http://wiki.openvz.org/Introduction_to_virtualization

But in most cases it still makes sense to compare it to VMware and/or Xen. For example, see this comparison of OpenVZ vs Xen done by HP labs: http://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/2007/HPL-2007-59.html

As of what containers, or OS-level virtualization is, there is a nice wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system-level_virtuali zation

Any further questions -- feel free to ask.

Hello kir
Thank you for the answer.
In this case I need to compare virtualization systems using the same technique. I believe I will compare openVZ with vitruzzo and virtual linux.

Is there any white paper for openvz or more comprehensive write up than the ones in the wiki.

Thanks
Razz

Well OpenVZ and Virtuozzo are based on the same technology so except for some extra useful tools and the Power Panel there isn't much to compare between OpenVZ and Virtuozzo.
