Hello Jim,
could you please specify which kernel do you use?
For example, we didn't have sound modules in 2.6.9-x kernels but in RHEL5 based kernels we do have them.
In general you can find configs for diffetent kernels here:
http://openvz.org/download/kernel/

The latest stable kernel, I think:
vmlinux-2.6.18-ovz028stab045.1-smp
Since this is basically a Ubuntu system, is there any reason to even try one of the RHEL kernels? In other words, is it know that it won't work so don't try?

Well, looks like mainsteam 2.6.18-x kernels have SOUND disabled at all, so it makes sense to try a RHEL5 based kernel.

# CONFIG_SOUND is not set
