Is it possible to build OpenVZ as LKM ? [message #14699]

hi all !

Currently, building OpenVZ kernel is *very* long and difficult process. Would it be possible to "migrate" this project from full-kernel-build to just kernel-module build ? (like KVM does)

It will save plenty of time for distros and users that want integrate with OpenVZ closer.

Extensive kernel changes are required to make virtualiztion possible. I doubt you could modularize them, unless the base kernel was redesigned to be compatible with a plug-in virtualization architecture. But that would be even more work than the openvz patchset.

IOW, not likely.

But the base kernel is *already* redesigned, starting from 2.6.20 (or .19?) it includes IPC virtualization and several other components.

What's the point of integrating those components upstream, if nobody uses them, and everyone needs to build custom kernel ?
