Hi,

I had installed OpenVZ on a Centos 5. I had notice that a new kernel is available for CentOS 5 via yum.

Installing:
kernel i686 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 updates 12 M
kernel-devel i686 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 updates 4.5 M

Can do allow this update?

uname -a
Linux openvz.domain.com 2.6.18-8.el5.028stab031.1 #1 SMP Sat Apr 28 00:38:07 MSD 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Thanks

you do not want/need to install this kernel. it is a non-openvz kernel, so all of the openvz functions will not work if you boot into it. I suppose you could install it, but ensure it is not the default kernel in grub.conf.

To let yum know you do not want stock kernels, you can add the following line to the appropriate yum repository configs (/etc/yum.conf.d/*.repo files, find where [updates] repo is configured):

exclude=kernel kernel-smp

Hi Kir, I feel this modification will block yum openvz based kernel updates as well. I believe this is why the kernel images used to be called openvz-*kernel-* or something like this, but dag wieers made a strong case to change it to kernel-*

Now, the package is:
/028stab031.1/kernel-2.6.18-ovz028stab031.1.i686.rpm

I don't know if there is a way around this, we need a regex match on yum exclude directive.

exclude directives are per-repository, so you can exclude newer kernels only from updates repo, but not from openvz repo.
