i'm a noob trying to find out what all the checkpoint (both checkpoint to file and migration) optimizations there are for openVZ, and how those are enabled. For instance, can openVZ do precopy or COW checkpoints? Seems that the --online option is available for migration, but does that work for checkpoints to file (to decrease downtime)?

By checkpoint/restore we mean procedure of saving/restoring VE processes state. If you need to make a disk state checkpoint/backup then you can use LVM snapshot feature.

Also check vzdump tool used for VE backup (it can use LVM if needed):
