Hi all,

I'd like to try out the nameserver functions of DNSMASQ in a VPS, however it doesn't want to start up at all. when the initscript is run it seems to hang (without failing) and the following message is logged to messages.

"dnsmasq: netlink returns error: Address family not supported by protocol"

I'm not trying to run the dhcp server functionality of dnsmasq (that would require the broadcasting+veth config) just a caching nameserver.

The only information I could find on this error was a german page http://people.debian.org/~terpstra/message/20070125.182810.5 413aaf5.en.html which mentioned problems in regards to virtual servers, hence my post here Smile

my setup: centos 4.4_x64, latest stable openvz smp-kernel.

I'm not having this problem. I'm running dnsmasq in a VE that's running Debian Sarge. The HN is Debian Sarge also.

In fact, the HN is a Debian sarge install in VMware, but hey, that doesn't matter, does it? Very Happy

Default install of dnsmasq seems to work fine!

cheers

Hi,

I found out that on a Stable OpenVZ kernel and a Debian Etch OS Template, dnsmasq (version 2.35) has a prob to start,
but on a Test OpenVZ kernel and Debian Etch OS Template;
dnsmasq used as dnsserver works fine!
and on stable OpenVZ kernel and dnsmasq (version 2.22), too

Which version of dnsmasq is used in your OS-Template ?

I'm running kernel 2.6.18-028test015 on Sarge.
HN and VE are both Debian Sarge 3.1

The dnsmasq package in the VE is 2.22-2.

I installed a 2.37-1.el4.rf.x86_64 rpm from rpmfind. perhaps I should try an earlier version, I'm using a stable 2.6.9 kernel. At any rate I've moved on to experimenting with maradns (just setting up a simple caching server). Thanks for the replies all, I'll have another go when 2.6.19 becomes the stable.
