Unable to enter VE [message #51247]

I created a new virtual machine using the debian 7 x86 template, but I am totally unable to enter this VE using the command "vzctl enter VEID". Other virtual machines, including Debian 6 x86 work fine.

I can only run commands using "vzctl exec VEID", and it seems that daemons inside the VE do not run at startup (such as SSH).

Is this a know issue? How can I fix it?

if already installed:
update-rc.d ssh defaults

No, no. The problem is that the command "vzctl enter VEID" does not work. The container has some other problems, but I think they are all related, since other containers work just fine.

I've tried all the methods that appear on the url you sent, but none of them worked.

I tried installing new server templates, using different versions of debian and ubuntu, and they all have the same problem, except for Debian 6, which is now outdated.

Is it my server's fault, or the templates are corrupt?

EDIT: I tried creating a new virtual server with the (working) debian6 and then upgrading it to debian7, and then the "vzctl enter" command didn't work anymore. Maybe I am using an old version of Openvz in my physical server?

How about actually looking at the versions etc. and telling us? Twisted Evil

Copy paste from the front page of the forum: "Please always report your kernel and tools version." Wink

Besides that, I suggest reporting:
- your physical server OS and OS version
- the list of the OS templates that work for you and those that don't, please also mention what exactly doesn't work.

Ok, sorry for not mentioning it.

Physical OS:
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.9 (squeeze)
Release: 6.0.9
Codename: squeeze

kernel version: Linux box 2.6.32-5-openvz-686
vzctl version: 3.0.24-12

My problem: the command "vzctl enter VEID" doesn't work. It doesn't give me any error messages. Using the strace command, I get this: pastebin.com/cm7ndd6j

Also, none of the daemons installed in the virtual server (such as SSHD) run at startup. I must start them manually everytime the server is rebooted. vzctl exec VEID <command> runs fine though.

I tried a few virtual servers, all of them x86. Debian 6, Debian 7, Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 13.10. The only one that works flawlessly is Debian 6. I installed all these templates using OpenVZ Web Panel 2.4.

I hope that is enough information.

you are using kernel and tools versions that are quite old and probably not supported.

even recent I saw some complaints that with debian7(?) something didn't worked, so dunno is it already fixed in stable vzctl or just in git. something related to "lo" network interface inside CT.

final recommendation would be search wiki,forum and openvz-* mailing lists how to use openvz debian repo and install openvz latest kernel and tools.

I mentioned openvz-* mailing lists because there was recently more activity related to debian and openvz use.

Thanks for your response.

I think the most reasonable move will be to upgrade my current physical server from Debian 6 to Debian 7, since the former is already unsupported and doesn't have any official repositories.

I will try to do that next week. If you don't hear from me in a while, it means that everything went as expected Very Happy

In case somebody wondered how it went, today I upgraded my physical server from Debian 6 to Debian 7 and added the official repository. This solved the problem that I explained in this thread.
