Hi,

I have currenly OpenVZ with Debian squeeze. As well known, OpenVZ is not included in wheezy any more Sad

How "reliable" is downloads.openvz.org/debian? Is it a reliable replacement for the original Debian packages in terms of:

1.) Is it an official part of the OpenVZ downloads or just put there as a convenience without warranty?
2.) Can I be sure that this repository will work at least until EOL of wheezy?
3.) Is the kernel always the SAME version and configuration as in wheezy but the OpenVZ patch applied?
4.) When Debian makes an update for the Kernel, will the update appear on downloads.openvz.org very soon later?
5.) My biggest concern: security. How does the OpenVZ repository deal with security problems in the kernel? Will it provide security fixes similarly fast as security.debian.org does?

The server needs to run the whole year without much user interaction in a stable and reliable manner. Suddenly not having a current kernel (because OpenVZ repository decides to shut down) or a security hole (because the repository does not provide the fixes in "realtime") could be a potential problem in my setup.

Thank you

I can't answer all of your questions, but perhaps this will point you in the right direction:

3) this isn't a Wheezy based kernel at all, it's a RHEL 6 kernel, precompiled for Debian

4) no, as Debian updates have no direct connection with this kernel AFAIK

5) OpenVZ RHEL kernels closely follow upstream RHEL releases. In my years of experience, security updates were always released quickly

BUT

seeing as the kernel under http://download.openvz.org/debian/ isn't very recent, it would probably be better if you compiled your own Debian kernel, based on a current OpenVZ RHEL kernel, or use Proxmox kernels.

Thank you!

That's not good news Sad Don't know what to do now Sad

I want to avoid an own kernel because it's an autonomous 24x7 system which should run with as few user interaction as possible. When a bug in Debian kernel is discovered it takes me a large time to install a new one which could be problematic.

We are working on bringing native deb builds of RHEL6 OpenVZ kernel to that repository. So far we have a testing build of a testing kernel available from http://download.openvz.org/deb-tmp/ -- feel free to test and report your results

Nice thanks!

I decided for http://download.openvz.org/debian now and it works and I hope security updates will be applied Smile

But I'll try http://download.openvz.org/deb-tmp as well. Is it planned to become also an apt-get archive?
