I'm having a weird problem with my CentOS 5 installation. I've installed CentOS5 from the original template. The problem I have is that when --ipadd is called.. it adds the interface as venet0:0. If I try and manually set venet0 to the external interface (it is set to 127.0.0.1) then I lose connectivity.

Any ideas?

It's not a weird problem it's a common way the "vzctl --ipadd" works. It creates an additional alias when you want to add ip address.

Is there a way to circument this method, and to make the container use the venet0 interface (like in the Debian guest) - otherwise I can't run samba inside the container.

Could you please describe what do you have in mind?
What does it mean "use the venet0 interface"?
If you assign an ip address to your VE via "vzctl --ipadd" utility your VE uses venet0 interface.
The debian guest behavior is the same or ... What is confusing you?
