Hi,

I have tried to install kernel-smp-2.6.18-ovz028stab035.1.i686.rpm on a CentOS 4 machine and here's the error message:

[root@server138 openvz]# rpm -ivh kernel-smp-2.6.18-ovz028stab035.1.i686.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:kernel-smp ########################################### [100%]
/sbin/new-kernel-pkg: line 200: 31367 Segmentation fault /sbin/mkinitrd --allow-missing -f $initrdfile $version
mkinitrd failed
error: %post(kernel-smp-2.6.18-ovz028stab035.1.i686) scriptlet failed, exit status 1

[root@server138 openvz]# uname -a
Linux server138 2.6.9-55.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed May 2 14:28:44 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Could anyone help me out?

By the way, I was able to install ovzkernel-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.028stab035.1.i686.rpm but swap was turned off. When I tried to swapon -a it gave me a message saying it could not allocate memory.

Thanks in advance,

Eugenio Pacheco

Looks like your system is hosed... Did you check the memory? Did you check the media before installing?

Please read the manual before asking questions:

Hi,

I didn't install the system on the server. It's a rented dedicated server.

I forgot to mention that kernel 2.6.9-023stab044.4-smp installed fine and swap is on.

Regards,

Eugenio Pacheco

I don't think that the kernel 2.6.18 works on a centos 4 distro.

You should try it on a centos 5 distro Wink

What's the reason that made you try to install the 2.6.18 kernel ? Maybe we can solve that problem, if you can't change the distro on the HN.

Hi,

Actually I have a couple of other servers with CentOS 4 installed and kernel2.6.18. I meant to install that kernel because it is newer and because there's a bug on the current kernel that doesn't allow me to use quota inside a VPS.

I could ask for a Reinstall to CentOS 5, but I haven't found anything here that says it works with CentOS 5. What would be better? CentOS 5 or Fedora Core 4?

Regards,

Eugenio Pacheco

If you check the download section you will see that a RHEL5 kernel is available.

Centos = RHEL = RedHat Enterprise Linux (without the support package)

I'm using Centos 5 on a box and it performs well...

I'm also using Centos4 on another box with the kernel 2.6.9 and i don't have problems with internal quota...

What is the issue ?

Eugenio,

First, I want to say, that you _can_ use 2.6.18 kernel on rhel4.

Second, please, check `dmesg` after unsuccessful try of `rpm -ivh`. I guess there is something in logs...

Vasily.

Hi,

Now when I tried to install the kernel again, it hung and didn't give any error message. It actually disconnected the ssh session.

I will just request for an OS Reload, I believe something went wrong on the OS installation.

Thanks for all the help.

Regards,

Eugenio Pacheco
