According to Yum there's a kernel update for the hardware node.

If I run yum, it attempts to download and install the one from the official centos website.

Is this correct?

Shouldn't it be using one from OpenVZ?

Thanks.

You mean that yum _inside_ VE offers you to install kernel?
Well, it's ok, because yum doesn't know, that it works in VE, so it tries to install kernel. It will not affect HN, it will boot in OpenVZ kernel, so don't worry!

Well,

In this situation, I think, your should update you centos kernel via yum and then check in grub.conf (menu.lst), that OpenVZ kernel is still default.

And what if it isn't?

What if it hasn't updated?

How would I go about updating the OpenVZ hardware node centos kernel?

Sorry, I don't get you really, but if the question is how you should update OpenVZ, then this is easy. In http://wiki.openvz.org/Quick_installation
is described how to add OpenVZ repo in yum repos file. After that, doing `yum update` on HN will also update OpenVZ if updates are available.
