How to make OpenVZ kernel and KVM module coexist_ [message #35447]

Hello

I was wondering if OpenVZ and KVM can coexist?

I have seen Proxmox VE and this product can run OpenVZ kernel + KVM module. Proxmox is Debian based and I don't want that - I want a CentOS based distro!

Is it simple to install KVM module under CentOS+OpenVZ kernel. Can KVM just be installed as KMOD-KVM from the repository? Or, do I need some advanced patching+kernel compilation.

If not possible, without advanced patching + kernel compilation, then I would suggest a new distro ;O)

Any idea, anybody?

I am also trying to create OpenVZ guests and KVM guests coexist on a CentOS machine with RHEL5 kernel. This is really what fits my needs best.

So, on a fresh CentOS 5.3, x86-64 installation, I install the latest KVM (v85) like described in http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1 9034&forum=38#threadtop

It works :

[root@hn1 ~]# uname -r
2.6.18-128.1.6.el5
[root@hn1 ~]# /etc/init.d/kvm start
Starting KVM: RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable

[root@hn1 ~]# lsmod | grep kvm
kvm_intel              86376  0 
kvm                   209576  1 kvm_intel

Now with the OpenVZ kernel the module is just not found :

[root@hn1 ~]# uname -r
2.6.18-92.1.18.el5.028stab060.8
[root@hn1 ~]# /etc/init.d/kvm start
Starting KVM: RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable
FATAL: Module kvm_intel not found.

So, I cannot start OpenVZ guests and KVM guests at the same time.

Is it normal or should I file a bug ? Or perhaps should I just recompile the RHEL5 kernel with extra options enabled ?

Hello

Have you tried to install KVM while OpenVZ Kernel is booted? I think it makes sense the KVM module is not found when you are installing the module under another kernel version.

I was able to rebuild the lfarkas.org kmod-kvm-85 SRPM package on CentOS 5.3 under the ovzkernel-2.6.18-92.1.18.el5.028stab060.8.x86_64.

KVM kernel module seems to coexist with openvz just fine. Haven't tried without rebuilding, though.

2.6.18-92.1.18.el5.028stab060.8.x86_64
kmod-kvm 85
kvm 85
libvirt 0.6.3
virt-manager 0.7.0
qemu 0.9.1

I'm doing further tests now...

Anyone has a similar setup and can comment on stability and other possible issues?

I was able to compile the lfarkas SRPM for kmod-kvm as well. The only issue was some missing dependencies.

I've been using it for a few days and it's been problem free so far.
