Yes you can run vmware with an openvz kernel. I have two machines set up
like that. They are using the older 2.6.16 series of test kernels b it
should also work for the newer 2.6.28 series as well.

It will not find a suitable module for the kernel and will just compile its
own which worked fine for me.

Have not tried Parallels.
