When it happens again, please do the following:
in VE0 (host system) run:
# top
then press 'M'
After that 'top' will show you most memory consuming proccesses first. The column 'RSS' shows you how much memory proccess has.
Please post it here and try to kill the offending processes. It should help.

BTW, how much RAM do you have on the node?
