> My questions are, should i use the x86_64 kernel (processor supports em64t)? Which are the advantages or disadvantages of using a 64 bit kernel+distribution?

if you use 32bit applications, better to use 32bit environment (though emt64 can run them).
the main 64bit advantage is bigger address space which is required for huge databases and applications.

I would recommend CentOS.

> The ia64 or the x86_64 for my arch?
x86_64. ia64 is itanium platform, not EMT64.

2.6.8/2.6.9 - doesn't matter much. 2.6.9 based on RHEL4 will be released quite soon, so you can use 2.6.9.
