OpenVZ uses an ancient kernel we can find with the dinosaur fossiles known as 2.6 - ubuntu 14 is leapyears ahead of that kernel version. I would recommend you install openVZ on CentOS 6.3 or 6.4 at the latest. Any later distro of linux may cause a lot of compatability issues due to the ancient kernel openVZ uses.
