Can anyone advice?

You need to add a route on the virtual host using the private IP as the
gateway:

i.e using your example

On the 1st VPS:

route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 10.0.0.179

On the 2nd VPS:

route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 10.0.0.173
