Q1. In order to create VFS containers using OpenVZ, is it necessary to create another partition (/dev/sda3) to place the virtual file systems?

That's not an obligatory thing to do. You may just create /vz subdirectory and that's all. But as you are using ext4 filesystem I'd earnestly recommend you to create a separate partition and format it as ext3 filesystem! It was tested and it works.

Q2. What kernel can I recompile and use?

The already compiled kernels are available there
http://download.openvz.org/kernel/
Source may also be fetched from git:

Q3. I've been reading the hardware and software requirements for OpenVZ in the Users' Guide and if I'm understanding correctly, it can be installed in either 32 or 64-bit operating systems. Is this correct? Or do I need to install Alien Bob's "multilib" solution to allow 32 bit applications to operate on 64-bit Slackware?

Once you're using the x86_64 operating system you have to install x86_64 kernel and tools. But once you'll install them you can create 32-bit containers without any difficulties.
