That's not an obligatory thing to do. You may just create /vz subdirectory and that's all. But as you are using ext4 filesystem I'd earnestly recommend you to create a separate partition and format it as ext3 filesystem! It was tested and it works.

Once you're using the x86_64 operating system you have to install x86_64 kernel and tools. But once you'll install them you can create 32-bit containers without any difficulties.
