Hello,

first of all, please check logs. Error messages might be saved there.
Then I'd like to note that Ubuntu 9.04 based on the kernel that is much newer that 2.6.18, so incompatibility issue might occur and it shouldn't be a surprising thing.
Hence, from the stability point of view Centos5 + 2.6.18 rhel5 based kernel is the best choice.
