I've got an interesting situation that I'm not sure how to diagnose or handle. Hopefully someone out there can point me in the correct direction. We've got a machine setup with 29 VE's on it and everything is running fine, with one exception.

When any VE is actually doing something with the disk, the waiting for I/O goes through the roof. However the same actions on the root node cause the problem.

To test I copied a large directory within a VE and the waiting for I/O reported in either top or vmstat went up to in some cases 70% to 80%. If I repeat the same operation in the hardware node, the value never gets above 0%. The main problem I'm having is that this is severely impacting the performance of a few of my VE's that are more disk intensive.

I'm completely unsure as to what this could be or where to look next, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone needs it:

OpenVZ Kernel: 2.6.18-028test007
vzctl version: 3.0.22
