ubuntu is the commonly accepted lead multi-media desktop distro (fedora was the most popular until 12 months ago)

centos is the standard for production machines (it is RHEL stripped of branding)

many people will argue that debian is easier and does it all better ... it is your choice

other distros are available to meet your needs whether you need a live disk or lite or specialist. distrowatch.com is the place to search for specialist needs
