I get this same error with gcc 3.3.6 and 4.0.3. I'm using the latest binutils (from debian) 2.16.

I scrounged a redhat enterprise linux 4 machine and it is compiling fine:
gcc version 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)

go figure....
