I'm wondering, is it possible for a root user of the VPS to install packages using the default yum package manager instead of using the wrapper?

Sure! That wrapper is more for mass-management things (like, say, you want to upgrade all your VPSs).

I'm assuming that building new packages from source or running RPM installs within the VPS are fine??

Sure!

Please go ahead and then tell us what do you think about OpenVZ, how it compares to Xen etc.

Kir.
