I wouldn't call a 4.5 load an "extreme load". I would also guess that the host machine and VPSes were still quite responsive.

My point is, don't use that single indicator as proof of a problem.

I realize you had a considerable amount of memory (8GB) so I don't know if a RAM upgrade would help any... assuming the machine in question can take more RAM than that.

Just out of curiousity, how big was your MySQL dump file and approximately how long did the operation take?
