Seems like a /etc/init.d/iptables bug.

[root@hib /]# iptables -A OUTPUT -p icmp -j DROP

[root@hib /]# iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination
DROP       icmp --  anywhere             anywhere

[root@hib /]# service iptables status
Firewall is stopped.

Since iptables -L show the rules and we can't ping the vps it seems to be working Smile
