Hi All, I am doing a new install of OpenVZ on a Debian Etch installation. At the point of creating a VPS for the first time I get the following error:
debian:/usr/sbin# vzctl create 101 --ostemplate debian-3.1-i386-minimal --config vps.basic
Unable to open /dev/vzctl: No such device or address
Please check that vzdev kernel module is loaded and you have sufficient permissions to access the file.
debian:/usr/sbin#

Any thoughts what could be causing this error and how I can fix this.

Joe

Hi.

+Are you booted into the VZ kernel (uname -a)
+Is VZ started? (/etc/init.d/vz status/start)

Rickb, hope this is the info you need. Thanks for your reply!

debian:~# uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.18-1-openvz #1 Tue Jan 16 10:22:13 EST 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
debian:~# /etc/init.d/vz status
OpenVZ is stopped.
debian:~# /etc/init.d/vz start
Starting OpenVZ: ..failed
debian:~#

The next step is to check the system logs.

/var/log/messages
/var/log/vzctl.log
dmesg

check those before and after VZ fails to start. New info should appear in one of those. then, either paste it here or the problem should be apparent.
