Hi,

Was hoping for some insight on this. Is it possible to add features of OpenVirtuozzo on to Virtuozzo?

For example OpenVirtuozzo is using a (not quite tested) 2.6 based kernel. 2.6 will add many new features (ie. O(1) scheduler, I/O schedulers, etc) that will help a VPS host. How feasable is it to run the OV kernel on top of VZ? Would just the kernel RPM's need to be installed or the kernel plus new vzctl tools and vzpkg RPM's?

If possible, I would definitely test it on a production host loaded with volunteer customers to see how much these new features help server load and capacity along with to help catch bugs in the kernel.

Just tried this... short answer: no way it will work, OV kernel lacks many modules (vzfs, etc).

You are right, OV lacks many Virtuozzo features and just a subset of it. Coming soon 2.7 Virtuozzo will be based on the same 2.6 kernel and will include all OV features plus traditional Virtuozzo features and many new ones.

As other VZ customers and I know "coming soon" means we'll see a 2.7 beta in November and maybe a release in December, I feel so teased Smile

What kind of scalability issues are you seeing resolved by using the 2.6 kernel? I am figuring the O(1) scheduler is a huge improvement has many VPS hosts have 2000+ running processes causing a load of 1-2 on an otherwise idle server just for system CPU, is that correct as to what you are seeing?

Oh, based on discussion in another thread (post id #92) i'd also like to know how tuning the vm.swappiness sysctl helps performance. As I stated my 8GB servers generally used 4-5GB for buffer/cache. On other types of servers I run setting vm.swappiness to 30 or so will help this greatly.

Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but when I was talking to SW-Soft at HostingCon, they said not to expect too many changes with the 2.6 kernel because they already have their own process scheduler, their own memory allocation code, etc. So many of the 2.6 features may not get seen when we switch to that kernel.
