OpenVZ and VMWare or Parallels on the same host? [message #8242]

Is it possible to load VMWare kernel modules into an OpenVZ kernel and
run VMware on the host? Is it possible to use Parallels alongside
OpenVZ? I mean on the host, not in the guests.

Would such a setup require a special network configuration? What if I
put two Ethernet adapters into the box? Could I use one interface for
OpenVZ and the other one for VMware or Parallels?

Someone may know for sure, but if not this may help. I have installed
commercial Virtuozzo inside VMware VE's many times and it works fine.
You don't need a special network config as VMware (or Parallels) just
virtualises the ethernet device and VZ (probably OpenVZ too) see it as a
physical device. IIRC there were compatability problems with one of the
VMware ethernet devices, but they have multiple options available so if
you have compatability problems try changing the ethernet device and it
should work fine.

Yes you can run vmware with an openvz kernel. I have two machines set up
like that. They are using the older 2.6.16 series of test kernels b it
should also work for the newer 2.6.28 series as well.

It will not find a suitable module for the kernel and will just compile its
own which worked fine for me.

Have not tried Parallels.

Sorry make that the 2.6.18 series. Openvz may well be part of the standard
kernel when we reach 2.6.28 :-)

Has anyone had any luck getting Edgy Eft to work inside a VPS?
If I'm using the old sysvinit-package from edgy then some parts like
networking won't start at boot - I have to start the init-script
manually... When using Edgy Eft's default init-daemon, 'upstart', the
VPS won't boot at all... well, it starts but after mounting all local
volumes it looks like as if the init process is shutting down - and so
is the vps.

Hi,

personally I have not tried it, though have you tried to change the "sh"
symlink from /bin/dash to /bin/bash?

The default sh symlink to /bin/dash has broken alot of scripts inside
Ubuntu. Fixed most of my problems anyways :)

Hi,

yes I tried replacing /bin/sh - no luck :-(

btw: I needed to upgrade my Kernel from 2.6.9-stable to the latest testing
release because upstart needs 'inotify' to work... Maybe there's a
"problem" with the virtualization there?
