I have a iso image that is based on CentOS and includes some other packages. I would like to make this into a VPS template as I will have dozens of like configurations.

Any documentation, ideas, recommendations or URLs?

As far as I understand this ISO contains the full system, that can be started on HN? Well, when just extract contents of iso image and create tar.gz archive for it, place this archive in /vz/templates/cache (choose right name for the archive, depending on distribution name, on which iso i based). Try to create/start VE. I guess some small problems will appear with staring VE (network, udev, etc.) but they are solvable. You can look at these articles http://wiki.openvz.org/Category:Templates to get some expirience on the subject.

Some progress to report.

I can mount the iso image and can now see the directories and files inside the image. There is also a .tar.gz file of the additional applications. This leads me to think that if I create a VPS with the standard template, then I might be able to unpack the application tar file and get to my "base" system.

However, once I have done that... how do I pack it all up again to create a new base.tar.gz file? Can it be as simple as running a tar command from the / directory?
