I want to copy the vz directories to shared storage in preparation for a system rebuild. Any issues with doing this while the partitions are active?

Thanks,
Derrick

My concern is the root directory.

Hello,

So, if I undestand you right, you want to copy /vz/root/ directory somethere without stoping VEs? Then you start the copies of VE on another server, and stop on the current. So your aim is to minimize downtime?
If so, why don't you use online migration feature?

Thanks.

Sort of. We wanted to copy the /vz/root, along with all other /vz/* directories, to shared storage while VEs were up. Then rebuild the box and restore the directories from shared storage to the same system.

We're just curious about this. If we have to stop the VEs to do the /vz/root directory then so be it.

Is the migration feature even available to us with what we have installed?

I see that vzmigrate is installed. I Just want to make sure it works given our levels and system.

Some of the utilities, primarily package management, do not work under 64-bit Linux.

vzmigrate migrates, i.e. moves VE. And you, as I understand, want to copy it, rather then move. Well, then better stop VE before copying. Otherwise you can have unconsistent VE.

vzmigrate should work on you configuration, but there is some constraints. I don't know them exactly, but better if both nodes have the same architecture, in your case 64bit...
Just try to migrate one temporary VE, if it works - then other VEs should migrate without problems too! Smile

HTH,
vass.
