Greetings

Is there any time frame for the release of the mentioned version or at least kind of release candidates?
I keep seeing "test" releases for quite some time now and was wondering what's the risk of these test version today given that they are "converging" to a stable version.

Thanks for any pointers

Well, it's been posted that they're going to move to 2.6.18 soon, so who really knows.

If you're asking whether the .16test releases are stable, I haven't had any problems.

Thanks for the info! Exactly, I was thinking about the OpenVZ kernel version ones. I'm just curious why it takes so long to get a "stab" out on a 2.6.16 (well now it's already a 2.6.18) based kernel version.

Is the OpenVZ team perhaps waiting on a major move e.g. by Linus Torwalds before going "stab" ? Or are there other dependencies i.e. as long Red Hat Enterprise 4 (based on 2.6.8, I believe) is around we will stick with 2.6.8 also on the OpenVZ side?

Just curious...

Actually, RHEL4 is built on 2.6.9, not 2.6.8.

faire enough, a reason less to stick with 2.6.8 and move to 2.6.18 Wink

Stability is the key to virtualization. If the developers don't believe that the newer kernels are as stable then I believe that they should stick with the older base.

I would actually like to see the test kernels move to 2.6.18 and the stable moved to 2.6.9 (based on the RHEL4u4 patch set). Moving to the RHEL4u4 kernel as the base would bring in new users who are afraid to use a lower kernel version than their OS came with and are also hesitant to use a kernel labeled as "test".
