I have noticed on my test machine (at home), it has an odd network card in it and I have found that the openvz kernel does not have the network card driver for it compiled into it due to errors when I boot it. I just recently bought a dedicated server and have a few questions.

I ran the command lspci to find which network card the dedicated server has:
01:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

Is this driver compiled into the kernel already? I dont want to set the openvz kernel to boot permanently as this kernel fearing that I will not have ssh access to the server. Then I have to have a technician come out and fix it, which costs $$.

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

This driver is compiled as a module in OpenVZ kernel.
So this module should be loaded on Linux start for example by adding appropriate alias in modprobe.conf.

8139 is the most common and most well supported NIC for Linux that I have seen. All of the openvz kernels support it. Safe to reboot!

Thanks for the help guys.

I changed the default value in the grub.conf file to boot to the openvz kernel and it worked great. No boot up problems at all. I really appreciate your help.

Alright, I just recieved another dedicated server and wonder if the network card module is compiled into the kernel.

00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78)

Thanks!

This driver is also compiled as a module in OpenVZ rpms.
BTW, you can easily find out it using kernel config files from download section. For example, in
http://download.openvz.org/kernel/stable/022stab078.21/confi gs/kernel-2.6.8-022stab078-i686-enterprise.config.ovz, we can see CONFIG_VIA_RHINE=m.
