Hi forum,

I want to install openvz on a new box with a pentium d 940 processor.

My questions are, should i use the x86_64 kernel (processor supports em64t)? Which are the advantages or disadvantages of using a 64 bit kernel+distribution? Which distribution package should i choose ? The ia64 or the x86_64 for my arch?

I use centos for my hn and on the download page (for rhel4) the users are warned that the kernel is not stable but the version number for kernel 2.6.9 indicates that is stable. Which one should i use ?

Sorry for the avalanche of questions but as my nick implies i'm quite a noob in linux and openvz and i thank you in advance for your answers.

if you use 32bit applications, better to use 32bit environment (though emt64 can run them).
the main 64bit advantage is bigger address space which is required for huge databases and applications.

I would recommend CentOS.

x86_64. ia64 is itanium platform, not EMT64.

2.6.8/2.6.9 - doesn't matter much. 2.6.9 based on RHEL4 will be released quite soon, so you can use 2.6.9.

Thanks for your aswers !

I knew something about ia64 being used on the itanium processor but i wasn't sure.

The server will run normal 32bit applications, nothing fancy just webhosting. I will use the 32bit version of centos 4.4 since not all applications come in 64bit versions especialy older ones.
