Hi Installed opnVZ with one the centos template. But am trying to get Jboss installed and having some issues.

1) when i run Jboss install i get

- Error -
java.awt.HeadlessException:
No X11 DISPLAY variable was set, but this program performed an operation which requires it.

looking through the site it says something about the $DISPLAY variable but when i echo $DISPLAY i get nothing.

I have amended the sshd_config file to allow x forwarding. I am using scp to connect through on my laptop. I get the same errors when on the host server and use a terminal window to connect to it.

2) when i try and VNC through i get failed to connect, the VNC server is running on my virtual server, but am a bit confused as to why it is not working.

3) is there a way to log into the virtual server with any graphical elements? for instance Gnome or KDE?

Really frustrating so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

you may try "ssh -X ..." when connecting to your ve. you need a local X-Server runnning (f.i. your laptop).

VNC will not work the way you wrote.

you can also install an X-Environment on your VE running a special X-Server for VNC. if this is running, you can connect via VNC to your VE.

greetings,
mario.

Thanks for the reply. I am a bit of a noob when it comes to Linux so don't understand what you mean too well.

Do you kow of an xserver for windows? or for the host system which is RHEL4. I presume i need an x server running on the host server to be able to connect through?

Regarding the X-Environment do you mean either Gnome or KDE or am i completely off track? if so do you know the best way to install them?

Thanks

you need a running x-server on the host where the window of your x-application should appear. this would be your laptop (that is running windows it seems). the host server doesnt matter in that way, he only acts as a kind of "proxy" for your network-connections to the VEs. you can use cygwin for windows to get a running x-server.

no, gnome and kde are only window-managers not the X-Environment. the X-server is independend from the overlaying graphical interface like kde or gnome. normaly the x-server needs some hardware for "painting" (like a graphic-card). the special x-server for VNC doesnt need a grapgic-card, cause he only handles virtual VNC-connections.

greetings,
mario.

ok thanks, downloaded cwgyin and still cant get it to work. Do i need to create the ssh from within cwgyin?

I am thinking that the centos package i am using ass a template does not have the packages needed to be able to run what is required. Will have a scout around.

and regarding reading that wiki page. I have read it and followed the instructions all the way through the wiki (which were execllent btw) but it still does not work. That page you say to look at does not give clear enough instructions (at least for someone like me) on how to resolve this issue.

i followed the Wiki to the letter and it is only this part tat i cannot get to work correctly. Maybe i am mis-understanding what i need here.

When I echo $DISPLAY i get nothing, this is when SSH from my laptop (windows) and from the host server(RHEL4) now is there particular software I need on the host server and or my laptop to be able to get this to work?

I am using winSCP on my laptop and a basic terminal window on the RHEL host

Thanks

i think your problem is, that you dont make a direct connection to your VE. try to get putty.exe from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.h tml.
its a ssh-client for windows where you can enable X-forewarding in the options.
so you need to connect directly to the VE without connecting to your host-server an then make another connection to your VE.

greetings,
mario.

... hmm, ok

1.) run the X-server on your laptop. make shure it acceppts incoming connections from other hosts (xhost +)

2.) make a direct ssh-connection to your VE with (ssh -X user@vehost) or with the putty.exe and X-Forewarding switched on

3.) normaly $DISPLAY on the remoteside (your VE) should contain "localhost:10.0"

4.) try to start some X-application (like xterm)

if you get an error message, post it an write which step went wrong.

greetings,
mario.

p.s. are you using private IPs and NAT for your VEs? is routing between your laptop an the VEs correctly configured?

ok got X-server up and running on my laptop added the command xhost + to allow all incoming, using the same program start an ssh connection with ssh -X root@address

Don't have xterm installed on the template i used so cant run that to test. will give it a download and see.

still get the same results though, echo $DISPLAY returns nothing, and running the Jboss installer jar return the same original error.

This is all running on our local lan, and i can log into the VE from my laptop it is just this install that isnt working.

Thanks a lot for your help btw.

have you checked the configuration of your VEs ssh?

"/etc/ssh/sshd_conf" should contain a line like "X11Forwarding yes" without any "#" before it.

Please, check is xauth installed in your VE?
If not - install it.

Hmmm...
"Remote: No xauth program; cannot forward with spoofing."
Are you sure xauth is installed in _VE_ which you want to connect to?
Please, do rpm -qa | grep xauth in this VE to check.

May be you can give me a remote access and I'll try to figure out what's the problem?

Thanks.

I get this when i run what you said. Sorry cant give you remote access.

# rpm -qa | grep xauth
xauth-4.3.99.903-2

maybe when i reinstalled this VE i have not configured the xauth bit correctly, let me go back over the wiki.

Solved, issue was due to an old version of xauth.

Thanks Vass and others for the help.
