I'm trying to apply the latest Intel microcode updates to my machine with an Intel Xeon processor. I've got 2 different types of machines and have been able to successfully update microcode on the machine that had a vendor provided BIOS update. I am unable to update the microcode on the machine without a vendor suppled BIOS update.

Im using microcode kernel module and microcode_ctl to load microcode. microcode_ctl is reporting success loading the microcode but I am not seeing the microcode number change in /proc/cpuinfo. Also not seeing SPEC_CTRL flag shown in /proc/cpuinfo. POC code that shows whether SPEC_CTRL is available or not is showing it is not. Due to this microcode not loading this system is still vulnerable to Spectre variant 2.

Is the OpenVZ kernel preventing the microcode from loading?

Surely not.
You might just have old microcode - Intel did not release microcode for _all_ cpus yet, only for some of them.
