Is it possible to run a ubuntu or red hat OVZ image on a say Wheezy host and if so are there any implications. Also if this is possible how does that work if the underlying kernel is shared?

Of course it's possible to run different OS templates on a single host. Try it...

As for implications - there are none, apart from usual ones that openvz itself brings.

I think it's easiest to learn about the differences between a regular hadware server and a virtualized container by reading the openvz's wiki, looking at the man pages of tools such as vzctl, looking at the various how-to's and articles posted on line, etc. Obviously, some differences exist or a container could not be separated from the host and other containers, but there are surprisingly few.

Like I mentioned, try it out. Openvz is simple to use and first hand experience is best in such cases.
