My problem with pinging ip addresses from inside a vps was resolved successfully here. Now I have added another vps and am getting the same error again, although the prior solutions are added.

I had 3 vps running fine.
I added a 4. vps.
I enter the new vps.
I do ping google.com or ping ip and it doesn't work
I enter the other 3 vps and pinging works
pinging to the new vps from outside works
/etc/resolv.conf is the same as the other 3 working vps
vps.conf is the same as the others, except the ip address

The first 3 vps were created with vps.basic conf. After this I ran vzsplit -n 10 -f vps.mytest as told in the manual and applied this new configuration to all 4 vps with the command
/usr/sbin/vzctl set 195 --conf vps.mytest --save

What did I forget here?

Yes, but it doesn't work. And as I said, /etc/resolv.conf is the same as the other 3 working vps.

where? in the hardware node? There are already 3 vps working perfect on this hardware node. In the VE? Why should I all of a sudden configure netmask in the VE?

Yes, on hardware node. You don't provide any concrete information, so we can only suppose your problem.

Try to use diagnostic tools, like a tcpdump etc...

OK. Let's do more complex expedition in your system. =)
Post output of the following commands here:

ifconfig -a (both in VE, HN)
route -n (both in VE, HN)
iptables -L -vn (both in VE, HN)

ping google by IP from VE: 64.233.167.99
Does it work?
pinging HW node, other VEs from the VE in question works?

If it is possible, you can give me temporary access to your node and I'll try to fix the problem at place.

Unfortunately this is not possible because of the contracts.

I suspect iptables a little.
Please, turn iptables off on HN and in VE for a moment.

I stopped them in both, no difference.

I for one suspect something different:

Some weeks ago I created 3 vps on this hn, doing a
vzsplit -n 4 -f sample

Now I added a fourth vps and did a
vzsplit -n 10 -f newsample

then I did
vzctl set VEID --config newsample --save

with VEID being all 4 vps.

I suspect the resources. I paste all vps.conf here (195.conf being the problematic ve):

I destroyed and created this vps again, and it works now.

This was a user error: I entered the wrong command

vzctl set --config vps.mytest 195 --save

instead of the correct one

vzctl set --applyconfig vps.mytest 195 --save

So the problem was the missing word "apply" Smile

Don't know why I thought that it works.

This is a transcript of what I did:

/usr/sbin/vzctl create 195 --ostemplate centos-4-i386-default --config vps.10stueck --private /home/195 --root /vz/root/195 --ipadd 195.141.1.95 --hostname backup.goeldi.net

Creating VPS private area: /home/195

I now can enter the ve now with vzctl enter 195 but pinging anything other than the HN or the other VE doesn't work. Domain names don't resolve. Pinging this VE from the HN works. From another HN doesn't. IPTables is NOT started on the VE. It is started on the HN and works for the other 3 VE. The other 3 VE have running IPTables.

I even went so far that I copied the working configuration file of the first VE to the other 3 (192.conf to 193.conf, 194.con and 195.conf) and edited the ip address and hostnames. The other 3 work, the fourth doesn't although there is no difference except the fact, that IPTables is not running.

So now all 4 VEs have the same configuration file:

Every one of my VEs tell me this error message. This ip address is NOT in use by any other machine.

All other VEs tell me that. I don't think, that this error message is correct. Why do the other ones work?

Please, do the following experiment. Set to VE, in which you have problem with netowk, IP address of VE that works good with network. Before it, of course switch the last one off.
Can you ping now?

Yes, as you can see I get the same error message. After this I made a restart of the ve and then it worked with the other ip address.
