system time problems with ovz kernels [message #445]

Hi everyone, the problem is simple to explain, when I start host machine with ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab050.1 after about a 2 hours not heavy work it's looses a system time and start show strange values on 'date' command ...

the time in parents is real time getted from other machine. Intervals between commands are not same everytime. The strange (for me) is that when I boot same machine with vzkernel-2.6.8-022stab038.1 I don't see any more these problems nomatters how long time machine work (I mean in days).

I tryed to copy /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Sofia like /etc/localtime, other try was to symlink (ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Sofia /etc/localtime), even I start ntpd that synchonyze system time but with ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab050.1 the time mess was here (after a 2 - 3 hours work) and as result was that everything was slow ... really slow (vzctl restart xxx = about 45 - 60 min.). The same problems I have and with ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab045.1

Now I use old vzkernel-2.6.8-022stab038.1 but everything goes fine without any changes on settings.

Do I miss something or there is a problem ? If this information can be useful the host machine is IBM ThinkCentre 2.4 GHz 512 RAM with Fedora Core 4 as a host OS and vztmpl-fedora-core-4-2.0-1.i386.rpm for VPSes

Please, provide the following information to help to resolve it:

1. during the boot kernel selects the timesource, check for string like this:
Using ... for high-res timesource
what timesource is used in 038 and in 045/050?

2. does kernel boot parameter "clock=pit" helps?
and "clock=tsc"?

3. I suppose this happened due to turned ON ACPI. Are you able to build and check kernel with options changes I will provide you?

I will give all this information as soon as possible. But yesterday I change the host OS from Fedora Core to CentOS 4.2 ... actually reinstall all. I don't think that this change some important, but if is better to host OS to be Fedora Core I will try to find another HDD for tests.

Hi again, now I have some of answers that dev ask.

1. During boot all kernels use by default tsc as high-res timesource. Kernels with I test are:
a) kernel-2.6.9-22.0.1.EL (CentOS 4.2 standart)
b) vzkernel-2.6.8-022stab038.1.i686
c) ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab050.1.i686

2. At this time machine work with ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab050.1.i686 but with clock=pit boot option and to now, for about 8 hours, there is no problem ... I will wait some more hours before try clock=tsc acpi=off.

3. Dev: yes, if you provide me options I'm able to test builded kernels. I am really sorry, but I have misunderstood the question last time ... english is not my native language, and some time I'm "lost in translation" Smile

I have saved dmesg messages from every boot with upper three kernels, and can send to somebody if think that they will be useful.

Latest news are that with ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab050.1.i686 and clock=pit boot option system time again failed after a 9 hours work. But for now with ovzkernel-2.6.8-022stab050.1.i686, default tsc clock and acpi=off boot option the machine works more that 24 hours without problem. If you need some additional information from me, or to make some test, just say.

thanks a lot for information. It was exactly ACPI I was going to blame since we turned it ON in v046, so you just confirmed my guess.

Running kernel with acpi=off should be ok for you now.
Give me to know if something goes wrong.

If the problem is ACPI, you could also try updating your BIOS to the latest version offered from your mobo manufacturer's site. In some cases it helps.

Yes, the problem is in ACPI as you say. With acpi=off boot option PC work more than 9 days without problem. I will try to update BIOS and will write again when test it. Thanks a lot and have a nice day (night by my timezone Smile
