Hello! Dear colleagues,

after install of openvz under centos 6.2 server won't reboot - as it looks with raid1 OR initramfs OR dracut OR kernel panic problem (?).

Here some more info to that case:

- System: CentOS 6.2 , kernel 2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.x86_64, RAID1 (md0 swap; md1 /boot; md2 all the rest)
- Installation precise like in wiki openvz Quick_installation and wiki centos.org HowTos Virtualization OpenVZ
- " yum install vzkernel.x86_64 " find and installs only 2 packages (no i686 pckgs!) - vzkernel x86_64 2.6.32-042stab055.12 and vzkernel-firmware noarch x86_64 2.6.32-042stab055.12 from openvz-kernel-rhel6 repository.
- Installed successfully.
- Configuring the grub.conf, sysctl.conf, selinux - are also performed.
- reboot. reboot fails.
- There is nothing helpfull in logs.

1st thing what i can see ist tail of serial console output:
..
dracut: Autoassembling MD Raid
dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/md2" found
dracut Warning: Boot has failed. To debug this issue add "rdshell" to the kernel command line.
.. and so on - please see images!

- If i configure in the grub configuration an kernel fallback - come the system well back in thats old kernel configuration.

Whats up?
Where should i search?
What can i try?

What is faulty - kernel? kernel-firmware? initramfs? dracut?

I am since about 3 days on that problem and 've read a huge amount of topics - but the problem is still not solved.
Please help to solve who can!

Thanks for any helpfull input!
Best Regards!

from you grub.conf and boot log's I see that you installed 32bit kernel while original is 64bit kernel

also you tried to boot kernel version 55.10, while you show that you are installing 55.12 kernel version...

please remove vzkernel and ensure that you installed 64bit vzkernel and that you realy try to boot this 64bit kernel

if you did everything correct than I suggest make it reproducable and submit a bug

With 55.10 and 55.12 - is my fault - screenshots comes messed up from different attempts. I'm sorry. But the failury and log was similar.

Please answer the qustion above - about 32bit kernel.
I'l check this and post new images/logs.

thank you!

Now i have one more input information:

I had tried simply to update kernel at an clean centos-6.2-minimal system with "yum update kernel" (absolut clean new image installation from server provider).

"yum update kernel" updates from 2.6.32-220.13.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP to 2.6.32-220.17.1 (- please see screens! -) well!

It installs new kernel AND new kernel-firmware

But the same "yum update kernel" at recovered work-system (with slightly older kernel and kernel-firmware) - goes into kernel fallback.

No one software on that work-system has maked any changes on kernel ever before - no patches! nothing! - only normal yum update, once or twice since new install of centos-62-64-minimal-image(naturally earler "subversion")

What can be the ground for such behavior? - korrupt initramfs? fails dracut to write correct initramfs?
Or is there anithing more what can disturb raid assembling? (please see all the 1st post and their screenshots!)

Thank you!

about 64bit vs. 32bit kernel entries.
yes, sorry
I was some how misguided by previous experience

anyway I don't understand why in this screen shots differs kernel entries. one tries to boot from /boot other from /

http://forum.openvz.org/index.php?t=getfile&id=1021&
http://forum.openvz.org/index.php?t=getfile&id=1026&

maybe you somehow messed up with /boot partition
can you try to umount it? and look what is in /boot?
do you have separate /boot partition?

can you successfully boot to "2.6.32-220.17.1" while it tries to boot from /?

can you try install vzkernel.x86_64 and ensure that boot entry matches original centos entry? (/boot vs. /)

readed your messages once again

I believe that problem is only with kernel entries or you messing up with /boot partition

universaly if you have /boot partition, entries should start with /
if you don't have separate partition than entries should start with /boot

but somehow even with original kernel one entry is with /boot other is /

By "yum update kernel" get grub.conf automaticaly updated to.

Old kernel-start-line becomes an "/boot" on the path and goes down in the file view. (on screenshot: I had changed textblocks in grub.conf for fallback reasons).

When kernel panic ocures - goes grub/load-prozess to the old start-line AND this entry works well! - with this "/boot"!

AND i had tried a kernel-start-line without this "/boot" - no effect.

AND finally - with original Centos-62-minimal - get the old kernel-start-line such "/boot" to - but the update works well!

It seems to be a litle bit more complecated issue...

Any ideas more ..?!
