We have noticed that our nodes have begun to use insane amounts of memory, even when there is no VMs on them. It is not disk cache or buffers or inactive memory.

After viewing slabtop I can see that dentry is taking up nearly 6GB of memory.

echo 2 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches fixes this for us when we run it every couple hours, but this is bad for performance as it forces data to be loaded from disk again.

We are running CentOS 6 with this kernel:

2.6.32-042stab049.6 #1 SMP Mon Feb 6 19:17:43 MSK 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
