Looking at Filesystem Hierarchy Standard, /var directory is for working data of the own host system, and not for others. /var/lib is for status data of the programs, available in next sessions.

As for web services, the FHS-conformant location for non-local served data is /srv

I think that /srv/openvz should be the default path for containers tree.
