When I log in to a client who is using the whole HDD:

# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/simfs 917G 19G 852G 3% /

but:

917 - 19 should be 898GB, not 852G

Could the difference be the amount of reserved blocks on your ext3/ext4 file system? Default is 5%.
