It seems you will have to ask who ever has control over the HN to do this for you.

I've studied this further and what I've gathered is that debian devs have decided to create a dependency on a component that requires hardware access, even though sshfs and higher packages do not ultimately need direct hardware access. It seems to have been imposed for some kind of convenience.

I'm not sure if it's something that can be enabled by the HN operator. Perhaps I could convince those controlling the HN to give me special access. But in principle, it's a flawed approach. Tuomas Noraef points out in debian bug report 503953 that it defeats the point of openvz model of isolating instances.
